About Bijin Japanese Permanent Hair Straightening, ReBonding

Is Japanese Permanent Hair Straightening Safe?

There are a lot of new smoothing treatments and straightening treatments on the market.  Which is safe?

Japanese Straightening solution is an age old product but a New Technique developed in Japan in 2003 by Liscio.  The active ingredient is Ammonium thioglycolate acid which has been used in the salon industry safely for 80 years.

It is never applied to the scalp, but kept 1/4 to 1/2" from the scalp to prevent breakage and protect the body from system absorption, scalp and follicles from direct damage.    100% of the solution is rinsed from the hair prior to ironing.  The hair is neutralized with low strength hydrogen peroxide to ensure there is no active solution in your strands.  You leave the salon with re-arranged bonds for permanently straight locks.

There are many brands on the market, but the success is reliant upon the straightening technician's skill and knowledge.  Note: hair previously treated with a relaxer or home color is not safe to straighten.  Your stylist should be very well experienced and be comfortable to say a client's hair isn't suitable for successful straightening.  It is critical that the client provides the stylist with chemical history of hair which is to be treated.

Michelle uses several brands, Liscio, which invented the Japanese Straighening technique.  Yuko, another brand from Japan which has a fantastic consistency, but more gentle than Liscio.  CHI and Shiseido are two other Thermal Reconditioning brands which she uses.  She will choose the best brand for your individual hair type and condition for the best results that you will love.  She has been trained and certified on all brands.

Brazilian Blowout or Keratin Smoothing Safe?

Brazilian Blowout, GK Keratin Smoother, ProAddiction, and Kerasilk Keratin Treatment are just a few of the brands that fall into "Smoothers" category.  Smoothers last  2-5 months and fall into two categories:

1.) with Formaldehyde producing chemicals, a known carcinogen.

or

2.) with Glyocylic Acid  and Sodium Hydroxide which leads to kidney damage or uterine cancer.  You can read about that  here which is the National Library of Medicine Forensic Science website.  Both of these are ironed at high temperatures.

Brazilian and Keratin Smoothers are ironed ONTO the strands, essentially baking an "outer shell" onto each strand.  This temporarily holds hair into a smoother look for up to 12 weeks, wearing off gradually during washing, brushing, even blowing in the wind when friction occurs against the "shell."  This results in fine particles being breathed into the lungs and penetrating the skin when strands touch the face and neck.  When the solution is heated, formaldehyde fumes are produced, then breathed into the lungs and penetrate the skin of the operator during the service.  Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen.  Formaldehyde will no longer be manufactured or sold in the USA as of January 1, 2025 according to Federal law.

Are Relaxers Safe?

Relaxers contain Sodium Hydroxide which also a known carcinogen reported to cause uterine cancer in the client as it is applied to the scalp and is systemically absorbed.   Sodium Hydroxide is in one GK Smoother formula and many other brands.  Relaxers provide slightly longer results such as 5 to 12 months, but contain Sodium Hydroxide.

It is a "controlled melt" of the stands which relaxes the bonds temporarily providing easier to manage hair, but at a grave cost.  Sodium Hydroxide will no longer be available in the cosmetics industry in 2025 due to consumer safety issues.  It is the same chemical used in grill and oven cleaners, as well as pipe cleaners that remove hair clogs.

In summation, there are a lot of "New" products on the market, but they come with health problems.  I am not comfortable with any brand that knowingly markets dangerous products to the public, as well as professionals who would be exposed repeatedly.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at  if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Yes. However, all bleach and harsh lighteners should be done after the Japanese straightening.

Hair that has been lightened too many levels is too difficult to straighten safely, at times.  Hair can easily be highlighted afterwards because your colorist can control where they apply lightener and goes on visual cues.

I cannot control the varieties of solution strengths, application timing, and strands so easily.  Additionally. It is impossible for me to know if any bleach mistakes were covered with toner or color.  such areas will immediately begin degrading and an emergency rinse is necessary at that moment to prevent damage.

Appointments are required for all services including in-person consultations.  However, you can text a photo of your hair taken from the back directly to Michelle for a quote and begin the consultation process.  .

Michelle only offers Japanese Permanent Straightening.

Japanese is not generally safe for previously bleached hair as it is difficult to determine if any over-bleaching has been covered with color or toning.  Especially on colored and toned dark hair.  I straighten bleached hair on a case-by-case basis.   I have alkali reducers which I can add to my formulas for controlled timing which are gentler and give me more control with my timing for gorgeous, safe results.

Yes!  However, it is recommended that you opt for Balayage which means "hand painted" in French. This allows for keeping bleach away from your roots or new growth which can challenge successful Japanese Straightening touch-ups.  Balayage also requires less trips to the salon, so maintenance is easier and costs less.

Note:  If the stylist uses foils for your highlights, it is not Balayge.  that is called "foil-ayage," which is not compatible or recommended for Thermal Reconditioning touchups.

No!  Shampoo selection is very personal due to other hair and scalp care needs, including budgets and convenience.  We will teach you how to select the safest shampoo for your home hair care maintenance.  We will discuss your priorities and steer you in the right direction.  Oribe and Moroccanoil available at the salon.

Yes.  Salon applied color is always safe prior to or after Japanese Straightening.   Root color touch-ups are best after your straightening because the treatment can lighten your hair half a level.  The new level is beautiful and can never be achieved otherwise.  Most all my clients opt to match the new half level lighter shade.  We don't want slightly darker roots since I cannot apply the straightening solution close to the scalp.

I cannot straighten hair that has been colored with Madison Reed color, organic, or ammonia free color.  These all use ethanalomine in lieu of ammonia which is 85% more harsh to hair strands than ammonia.  The marketing of these products are misleading to consumers.  Ethanolamine is less noxious to the nose, but it causes incredible weakening of the cuticle.  The predisposes the hair to greater damage than ammonia.

I no longer straighten hair that's been colored at home due to high risk of overprocessed hair.  Clients aren't skilled at proper application of color.  The solution will cause the over processed strands or areas to glow a bright yellow which indicates degradation of hair (due to over processed hair).  Emergency rinse is necessary.

Permanent Hair Straightening is a multi-step chemical process that permanently restructures

the hair shaft, resulting in beautiful, smooth and straight hair. When performed by a highly

trained professional on unprocessed (natural, undyed, unbleached hair) results are successful

    and predictable.

However, if the process is done on chemically treated, highlighted, or home-colored hair,

permanent damage will occur – from breakage to uneven texture.

Our goal is not to alarm, but to inform. Because this is a chemical process, it is imperative for us

to have a thorough and honest consultation process before we will agree to work with a client.

We pride ourselves in delivering great results and will only take on clients where that’s

achievable – for our sake and theirs.

Michelle conducts all consultations via text message. That way there’s a record of client conversations

and images, for reference as needed.

It is my goal in the consultation process to:

 Earn your trust. With 21 years’ experience, my goal is providing a safe, professional

and honest environment for my clients. My business model for ultimate

transparency and open communication ensures that I am able to provide clients with optimal

    results.

 Learn your hair’s chemical history and understand your hair type. Clear

communications of hair type, length, history and prior treatments are MANDITORY.

There are often solutions in approach, technique, timing, product strengths, etc. for hair

with multi-canvass chemical history. I can only apply appropriate techniques if I

have a clear chemical history of your hair.

 Determine if my service is a good fit for your hair goals. Please be honest and

forthcoming about prior chemical history. If I feel prospective clients are not being

honest, sharing full hair history or hiding hair in pictures, I will NOT agree to perform

    permanent hair straightening.

Unrealistic or unmet goals result in dissatisfaction or worse.

A potential client who is disrespectful of my time, specialty, or experience will not receive

    an appointment.

 Provide a time and cost estimate. The hair straightening process takes precision and

time. Because of that, I charge by the hour. If I feel you are comparison price

shopping, that’s a red flag for hair health is second to savings and I can refer you to other stylists who may be willing

to assist. More on pricing below.

Occasionally in consultations, clients will ask what products I will be using. For a variety of

reasons, I don’t share that information in advance. However, if you have a particular brand

you’re interested in, please let me know. I will try to accommodate but recognize that the

product may not be right for you. Yuko, for example, is one of the most premium brands and is

one of the most gentle products. It will not straighten all hair types. For that reason, I select

products based on individual client needs.

Ultimately, I am responsible for the results and would never allow a client to be the sole

decision maker on product selection, timing, or usage, as it would be irresponsible,

    unprofessional, and reckless.

I am not allowed to sell any straightening products, by law, to clients unless they are licensed

    professionals.

Please come prepared to sit for a few hours. Hair straightening does take quite some time so

have a good meal and bring snacks and water.

My prices are firm, yet competitive.  As stated before, clients

who bargain hunt for this service raises the likelihood of compromised hair integrity due to a history of cheap products and services.

My prices are not based on you being a student, your travel expenses, or your lifestyle choices, etc.

My prices are based on my work, education, licensing, skill, experience, overhead, and my business model.  My price includes any necessary retouch if the hair doesn't get completely straight at no additional charge.

Oiling the hair, applying product to minimize the appearance of volume, hiding hair, or sending a

child's photo for your estimate will become obvious the moment you step in the salon, and we

will not be able to provide the service for the estimate provided under misleading information.

We charge hourly, rounding up to the nearest quarter hour for the multi-step straightening

process. Upon texting a photo of your hair, we will estimate how long it will take and determine

the price estimate before we book your appointment. NOTE, this is an estimate and subject to

    slight change.

Starting price is $125 for 1 hour, but the process can take several hours depending on hair type and length.  4 hours is average.

If you have a budget in mind, there are ways to help you achieve it:

    a.  We can offer a referral to another stylist.

    b.  We can cut off length of hair to minimize price.

    c.  We can apply the solution further away from the scalp which trims time, work, and product.

This option may not be ideal for clients with thick or tightly curled hair.

Please ask if you are interested in alternative options to fit your budget.

If you wish to proceed with a consultation, please text me at 972.388.6279. Please send a photo

of your hair from the back so I can see how much hair you have, discuss pricing and

    next steps!

I truly appreciate clients who trust me with their hair, and don’t take this privilege lightly. I

love watching clients walk out with straight, manageable, easy hair!
